Includes bibliographical references and index.
This book consists of a series of papers, originally delivered at the Australian National University, on various aspects of the politics, sociology, demography and particularly the economics, of Malaya, Singapore, Sarawak, and Sabah. Chapters on the social, political and demographic background of Malaya are contributed by Silcock, Sadka and Caldwell; Corden deals with prospects for Malayan exports and the balance of payments problem, whilst Wharton looks critically at the relationship of the all-important rubber industry to the economy Fisk, McKenna and Wheelwright discuss rural problems, financial developments, and industrialisation, respectively, and the book concludes with a general review of economic policy by Silcock.
