Summary, etc. Welcome Address by the Chairman, Library Committee
Library Week 30th May 2018
Protocols
It is indeed my pleasure to welcome you to the third edition of the CBN Library’s Week which has the theme: “Promoting Information Access and Visibility: the role of the CBN Library”. The aim of the Week is to showcase CBN Library resources and services to the CBN community.
Organising the Library Week biannually was necessitated by the need to create awareness on the Resources and Services of the Library and to orient Staff on how to use them.
It may interest you to note that the Bank has acquired a lot of print and electronic resources which Staff needs to have adequate awareness of in order to effectively use them.
The CBN Library can boast of having one of the richest collections in Banking, Finance, Economics and Management in Nigeria. To strengthen this collection, it has further embarked on the acquisition of more of electronic resources covering the core mandate of the Bank. These resources include: Electronic Databases, Electronic Journals eBooks, Data and Statistical Sources.
To further enhance the operations of the Library and ensure that staff have adequate access to resources and services, the e-Library Project was improved by the Management.
As a preamble, it is necessary to briefly trace the evolution of the Library of the Research Department. The Library Division is one of the oldest Divisions in the Bank because and was created in 1961 by Janet Borgadus of Federal Reserve Bank, New York to support research, and policy development activities of the Bank. It has been carrying out these responsibilities efficiently and effectively over the years.
The advent of information technology and the availability of a networked environment the Bank, necessitated the acquisition of electronic resources to ensure that Library users can access these resources remotely.
To further enhance the operations of the Library and bring its services closer to users, the eLibrary project was approved by Management as one of the Strategic Transformation Initiative (STI) of the Bank for implementation in 2017.
The first phase of the initiative involved the implementation of the Koha Library Management system. This system was successfully implemented in 2015 and is now being used to manage the routing operations of the Library. The system provides access to the CBN Library online catalogue which can be accessed by Staff globally. Users can log-on to the online catalogue, interact with the Library, request for books to be put on hold for eventual pick-up; suggest titles of books for the library to acquire etc.
The second phase of the eLibrary initiative, CBN Institutional Repository (CBNIR) and the Discovery System was successfully completed in December 2017. This phase of the initiative is geared towards long-term preservation and enhancement of global visibility to CBN research and publication. It is also aimed at unifying search and discovery of CBN Library resources and services. In doing so the CBN Library hopes to put the Bank on the global map of research and publications.
eLibrary Phase III Digital Commons, is intended to take the quest for enhance globally visibility a step further through the implementation of relevant technologies, processes and capacity development of internal and external stakeholders. It is also intended as a virtual, collaborative environment that would bridge the gap between basic and applied research in the Bank as well as prevent duplication of research. Finally, it is aimed at developing and implementing appropriate tools and strategies for the enhancement and accurate measure of CBN research impact.
Apart from showcasing the Library’s resources and services, this week seeks to create greater awareness of the eLibrary Phase I and II, as well as external partners of the Library (Book Vendors). Your participation in the week will therefore not be completed until you all to visit the various exhibition to find out what the Library offer, how to use the resources and services at your desktop whenever the need arise.
To the Library Division I advise that you use the week as a feedback mechanism to identify from your users areas weaknesses and work assiduously to address them for improved service delivery.
I strongly believe that after the Library Week, there would be significant improvement in the use of the Library and its resources by members of staff.
Thank you for listening.

This is a collection of speeches delivered by Chief Ogunbanjo between 1969 and 1962 which advocates for the encouragement of private enterprise as a means to prosperity in Nigeria.
