520 _aResearch for this book, which consists of three related essays, was conducted over a ten-year period. The first essay, which relies upon published data, gives an overview of Puerto Rican economic development since 1945; the second and third are based on interviews with island managers and a large sample of workers conducted in 1944-45. There are "cross-linkages" among the parts, but the authors indicate that each essay "stands on its own feet." The study is heavily documented. It includes 85 statistical tables, and 60 supplementary tables are available from the authors.
