520 _aThe purpose of the study was to investigate the main "personality", "small group" and "organizational" variables determining the etiology of absenteeism. The methodology revolved around a questionnaire devised to measure 50 explanatory variables and administered at their place of work to 2,227 male shift workers selected from 21 large Dutch corporations. It was not anonymous. Controls were introduced by using response set scales and interviewing a small sample of subjects in their homes. Items were pretested and later subjected to factor analysis. A semi-experimental design involved comparing high and low absentee workers and other control groups on the 50 variables. In addition the study reports a correlational analysis using partial correlation techniques.
