520 _aThis is a geography of Nigeria, based upon some published material, unpublished official data, and the authors' own fieldwork. Chapter I describes ' The Environmental Setting '-geology, relief and drainage, climate and vegetation, and soils. There is also a short section, by a collaborator, on 'Disease as an Element in the Nigerian Environment', which summarizes neatly the present rudimentary state of our knowledge in this important respect. Chapter II,' The Human pattern lists the major racial and cultural groups in Nigeria in relation to environment. In Chapter III, ' The Agricultural Economy', the major subsistence, internal exchange, and cash crops are described in detail, and there is a concise analysis of some of the changes in emphasis these have undergone. Chapter IV deals with ' Forest Resources ', Chapter V with ' Mineral Wealth '. Chapter VI describes the many forms of transport, from head-porterage to air travel. Chapter VII enters into the less central topic of' Public and Social Services '.
