A revision of the author's thesis, Columbia.
Includes bibliographical references.
Central to this study is the probing, in the first part and in the case studies in the appendix, of the empirical validity of the theories of natural monopoly, regulated natural monopoly, and what has been termed here the competitive analogue. From this follows the empirical demonstration that the businessman cum monopoly cum state commission regulation does not equal the businessman cum competition.
