Summary: This work is a study of capacity for the U.S. petroleum refining industry. Chapter 2 examines the nature of the industry including the technical aspects, market structure. Chapter 3 considers five problem areas with which any capacity measure should deal. Chapter 4 presents the theoretical derivation of capacity, defined as the minimum point of the short-run average cost curve. Chapter 5 and 6 present empirical results of the measurement of capacity for the U.S. petroleum refining industry using two alternative approaches. Chapter 7 restates basic conclusions of the study and the implications for future research.
