International tourism is the largest single item in the world's foreign trade and for some countries it is already the most important export industry. In regard to the economic role of tourism, the outlook of I.U.O.T.O. is close to that of the author. But I.U.O.T.O. also reasons that tourism must be viewed in terms wider than those which relate to simple commercial expediency and economic profit. The study of tourism must embrace and combine a multitude of disciplines, including science, technology, sociology and psychology as well as economics.
