Mr. O'Brien shows us, in this able and comprehensive
study, that there was a great deal of government control over economic affairs in Egypt in the three or four decades before the advent of military rule in 1952, and that the large-scale nationalization of the early nineteen-sixties has not led to much socialism in the sense of "distributive justice"
