"Written under the auspices of a project on mediating structures sponsored by the American Enterprise Institute."
Includes bibliographical references and index.
This book makes important contributions in at least four areas. First and most directly, this essay contributes to the current discussion on health policy by drawing attention to a commonly neglected factor (the role of mediating structures). Second, the authors make a contribution to the general discussion of what directions the modern welfare state should take. Third, the book demonstrates the applicability of sociological theory to some very practical concerns. Fourth, the book contains some highly intriguing "ethnographic" studies worth reading in themselves (namely, the "closer looks" at home childbirth, the Catholic charismatic movement, and rape crisis centers).
