Summary: The book attempt to evaluate the effects which the overseas operations of American multinational firms have on domestic employment and income, a subject about which there is much strong feeling and a not inconsiderable amount of literature. They take issue with existing studies on several grounds; in particular, their failure to examine the question what would have happened in the absence of direct foreign investment (DFI). For this purpose they develop a short-run micro-model in Chapter 3 for estimating the degree of substitutability of home production for foreign production under two alternative policy regimes, when: a) there are no restrictions on the firm's activities, and b) it is denied the option of establishing a foreign production subsidiary.
