In this study Dike examines the effects upon the peoples of the Niger Delta and of their contact with Britain during the nineteenth century. Dike's chief contribution is his analysis of the way in which this economic revolution affected the African city-states on the coast, hitherto the monopolistic middlemen for the slave trade, who had to adapt their organizations to the palm-oil trade.
