It is a supplementary reading for courses in international economics or politics. The first two chapters introduce political science concepts employed in the book. Chapter 1 is devoted to an explanation of political science vocabulary and the presentation of a simple "conversion model". The second chapter examines briefly the links between foreign and domestic policies and politics. Chapter 3 examines the economic and non-economic bases of military power. Chapter 4 discusses the role of economic wealth as a basis for national economic power-the ability to deliberately use economic wealth or policy "to modify the behaviour or capabilities of other states. The next three chapters are devoted to the uses of power. Chapter 5 deals with aspects of the use of military power including the decision to resort to war or military threat, the effects of modern technology on the usability of military force, and the national and group goals behind past wars. Chapters 6 and 7 concentrate on the uses of economic power. Chapter 8 reviews the conclusions of the book. ER -
