N2  - This volume provides an analysis of the characteristics and behaviour of different sectors of the Indian economy. It is an extension of the author's Ph.D. dissertation submitted to Lucknow University. 
Part I deals with the supply conditions in agriculture and industry in the short and long run (1911-51). The chief feature of the Indian economy is its heavy reliance on agriculture, combined with the relatively inelastic food supply and the large increase of population. Part II considers occupational distribution of population, net output and relative incomes, wages and consumption patterns. Colin Clark's well-known hypothesis was tested by the Indian data. Part III examines the problems of industrialization in India and evaluates the experiences of the five-year plans.
