Ever since the Soviet bloc began its trade-and-aid drive in the uncommitted countries of Asia and elsewhere under the slogan of "competitive coexistence," Western statesmen and economists have been pondering its implications. What use is being made of the economic instruments in Soviet and Western policy? What is the impact in the less developed areas economically, psychologically, and politically? What are the tasks and alternatives for Western policy in the face of the competitive challenge?
The present volume pulls the threads of the discussion together and considers the needs and aspirations of the developing countries that gave rise to the new competition; evaluates the capabilities of East and West to cater to these needs and the manner in which this is being done.
