Summary: The book appears in three volumes: Volume I "An Analytical Framework" discusses the factors which have to be taken into account in judging a developing country's ability to service external debt. The authors, members of the staff of the World Bank, consider both the liquidity aspect and the long-term growth aspect of debt servicing capacity and point to the limitations of the debt servicing ratio as a measure of credit worthiness. A concluding note lists some of the policy implications of the study. Volume II "A Statistical Presentation" provides data on the external debt of a number of developing countries for the period 1955-1962. Volume III, "Essays", contains five research papers on various aspects of the debt servicing problem.
