The granting of independence to India, in August 1947, was one of the most significant events of modern history. Centuries of
British rule and dominance over four hundred million people were terminated with a dramatic suddenness that startled political observers. This was an important survey of recent and current economic situations and conditions in the Republic of India. It presents fourteen chapters relating to the legal, economic, and political environment as these affect foreign investment in India. Each chapter surveys the historical development and present situation of its special subject, as determined by the Indian constitution (1950) and subsequent pertinent legislative acts.
