This book is a timely and thought-provoking one suggesting that one of the major forces influencing the economy in the last decade has been the growth of government regulations. It provides careful documentation to show that the expansion of government activities has been very costly and that has contributed to the increasing problems of unemployment inflation. Chapters 2-8 describe the methods by which the government influences business behavior. For example, government procurement contracts spell out in detail the following policies firms: pollution, employment, wage and salaries, energy conservation, hiring, and buying American. While these policies may be worthwhile, they usually increase costs which are later passed on to consumers.
