Summary: The analysis of life insurance company investment behavior presented here by the author recognizes the fact that the 70 largest life insurance companies, which hold about 80% of the industry's assets, do most of their investing in bonds, mortgages and real estate through forward markets. The model used builds on theoretical, and empirical work, but the approach used makes more realistic assumptions about market structure and institutional behavior and, thus comes closer to reproducing the dynamics of actual life insurance company investment process for the 1960-78 period.
