The topic is introduced with a short discussion of financing expenditures and the importance of intermediation in this process. A discussion of the sources of funds, the determinants of investment behavior, and the regulation of commercial
banks, savings banks and associations, life and property insurance companies, pension plans, and investment companies follows. After this discussion organized in
terms of lenders, the markets are examined in terms of borrowers. Here the emphasis is on the market organization, the relative importance of each institution, and the needs
of the borrowers. Goldsmith includes a discussion of the history of finance and a gaze into the future. He also attempts to provide the framework by discussing the theory of intermediation and competition for deposits.Goldsmith introduces the subject by comparing an economy with no financial deficits or surpluses to a system with direct finance, and finally to one with indirect finance and intermediation.
