Summary: This book tackle the theoretical aspects of the subject of money in the context of British institutions and practice. It considers the state of flux in monetary affairs, and operational principles of the new British system of credit control which are set out and discussed clearly. The style is lively and lucid throughout. The order of development runs from the theory of money itself, through monetary control theory and a descriptive section on British financial institutions, to the operation of monetary policy in the United Kingdom since the war; and there is also a final section devoted to international monetary questions. Policy is considered against an appropriate theoretical background and with an understanding of the controversies which have influenced the authorities' behaviour. Crockett's own experience with the Bank of England and the International Monetary Fund gives him an unusual insight into the authorities' intentions and the pressures which bear upon them.
