This is a collection of twelve essays by distinguished scholars and journalists first presented at a conference organized by Brookings Institution. The scope of the book is refreshingly wide: it is not, as one might fear, mainly about voting behavior in the United States, but covers a wide range of topics related to elections. Furthermore the essays are all very readable, and one of the main strengths of this volume is the attempt to place elections in the late twentieth century in a much broader historical context. There are three essays on presidential elections, two each on voter participation and corruption in American elections, and four essays on the role of parties.
