This book, like the author's preceding books on Japan, is lucidly written, and for those who wish to give to their students competent discussions and descriptions of postwar Japanese
economy, it is excellent. Professor Allen draws a vivid picture of a rapidly growing economy and covers what is considered the central facets of postwar growth and other unique aspects of Japanese economy, such as the Zaibatsu-dominated market structure (using it in the qualified sense that the author uses), intricate and cohesive patterns of concentration of financial power, dual structure of the labor market and wages, unorthodox but effective monetary policy and the rapidly changing and diminishing importance of the agricultural sector, and so on.
