Summary: The book is concerned primarily with consumer demand. The aim of the present work is to provide a fully integrated theory of consumer choice and demand, in which the characteristics of goods are taken explicitly into account, as an alternative to ad hoc models devised to deal with special situations. Such a theory provides a basic structure within which product variations and new goods fit easily and naturally. The first part of the book is devoted to the basic development of the characteristic approach, largely in terms of a linear technology, and its application to demand theory. The second part of the book explores the requirements for making the characteristics approach operationally useful.
