The author’s central effort could be summarized as an attempt greatly to broaden what Joseph Schumpeter called the "vision" of economics. In a typically striking phrase Boulding describes conventional economics as a "sunless astronomy of commodities. What Boulding seeks throughout his work is a higher level of systemic analysis.
