The papers in this volume are marked by a certain diversity; this was inevitable, since amongst his admirers there are many whose concern, in life as much as in economics, range over a wide spectrum. The themes covered are those which have drawn Das Gupta at some point or other in his career. Issues in economic theory, particularly the theory of value and distribution, have been among his abiding interests. He has also been concerned with the problems of planning and development. Most of the papers concentrate upon these fields; each of them in its individual way thus represents the author's tribute to a great teacher and a lover of the science of economics, who, for not one single moment, has forgotten the relationship between life and economic analysis.
