Online resources: Summary: The world economic situation continues to present a sombre background to the state of food and agriculture in 1981. Basic structural problems persist which adversely affect the performance of the agricultural sector and overall prospects for development. High inflation, inadequate or even negative economic growth, high rates of unemployment, large external imbalances, high rates of interest and sharp movements in currency exchange rates continue to plague the world economy. In their totality these represent the malfunctioning of the international system of trade, markets and payments and are manifestations of the adjustment problems that developed and developing countries face. In view of the complexity of the state of food and agriculture, both in assessing its current aspects and analysing longer term trends, this chapter has been divided into two parts, each devoted to its particular time span, current or longer term. However, it is, of course, not easy to clearly distinguish current developments from those evolving over a longer period. Therefore Part I of the chapter, reviewing the current world food and agricultural situation, inevitably in some instances has to be extended to cover longer term issues and developments in world agriculture, the subject of Part II, and so in these instances blends with it.
