Summary: This text brings together a selection of papers generated by the "Florence School" of Becattini, Bellandi, Ottati (all U. of Florence) and Sforzi (U. of Turin) over the past 20 years. They explore the industrial district, as both a general and an open framework for modeling local development, and as a significant element in the recent history of Italian industrialization. The framework is rooted in the Marshallian concept of territorial external economies, which the authors link to classical economic theory
