The present paper is a translation of the author's contribution to the final report of the study group on Agricultural Irrigation and Rural Villages in Asia, at the Institute of Development Economics. In order to establish that the agriculture in monsoon Asia is characterized by its irrigation, Japan is taken up and analyzed here mainly in her early modern period, which shows the most intensive form of irrigation agriculture in Asia
