Includes bibliographical references.
The Italian Institute for Industrial Reconstruction (I.R.I.) came into being in 1933 by accident with the nationalisation of three major banks and its future remained uncertain at least until 1956. Now a huge multi-sectoral public enterprise, I.R.I. has had a major role in Italy's post-war economic development. This book of essays attempts to evaluate that role and to consider the question, not for the first time, whether the " I.R.I. formula " might be applied in other mixed economies.
