The book is the outcome of a study group set up by the Council on Foreign Relations to carry out Lord Salter's suggestion of "an American examination of the Sterling Area." "Sterling" is a wider subject than the Sterling Area. It describes the aim of the book as "to review the problems of Sterling in the setting of its long history and its wide use all over the world.
