This book provides a review of the history of federal efforts in the United States during the 1960s to stimulate area and regional economic development. It recommends a growth centre policy. Such a policy concentrates development programs on urban places that show potential for economic growth and for attracting population from depressed, and frequently rural, hinterlands. Simultaneously it seeks to depopulate places regarded as having a negligible chance of economic revival.
