The book seeks to address the question of whether a free market or state planning is more conducive to economic development by examining the cogency of economic liberalism to problems of growth in underdeveloped areas. They attempt to argue that the price mechanism is an inadequate catalyst and polarising agent in initiating and sustaining an expansionary momentum. The book further attempts to unravel the historical strands which have led to the disintegration of this mechanism and indicate the contributory causative factors which have led to its eclipse in certain countries and to a questioning of its primacy in others.
