520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. This book examines the subject of corporations’ social responsibility to the immediate environment it operates. According to the book, the business enterprise is a production machine with a profit orientation, to be certain, but this machine operates in a particular environment which shapes not only constraints on the enterprise, but its objectives as well. Executives are not mechanical robots immune from the social milieu in which they have grown up. Their utility functions as well as the constraints which face them are given a social definition. Conventional economics ignores the implications of a sociological input into micro-theory

They authors suggest that diversification of shareholdings by many corporate owners requires that firms engage in programs which do not pay from their point of view, but which benefit their industry or the corporate system at large.
