520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. THE aim of this substantial work is to examine the problems arising from the international use of sterling, with special emphasis on political factors. A long introduction on the politics of international currencies is followed by an historical survey which traces the evolution of sterling: its conclusion is
that by the end of the 1950s the dissolution of the traditional system was only a matter of time. Signs of disintegration are noted in the altered reserve role of sterling as member countries began to diversify their reserves while other aspects of the process were the attempts of the British overseas banks to
adjust to the changed environment and new functions for London as an international financial centre.
