The study committee on financial institutions was mandated to study financial institutions specifically to "recommend measures which should be taken to govern the activities of financial institutions in such manner as to protect the public interest and promote the Province's economic and industrial expansion". This mandate was inspired by a number of events which occurred in financial markets during the preceding period.
