This study provides a history of the various banks which have gone into the making of the Bank of London and South America, which celebrated its centenary in 1962. However, it is far more than a banking history, for Mr. Joslin has deftly sketched for each sub-period the economic relations of Britain and Latin America as a background, since the fates of these banks
were intimately connected with British trade and investment interests, with which they were more concerned than the provision of purely domestic facilities and the supply of long-term finance for Latin America. Indeed, knowledge of such a background is vital for a proper understanding and appreciation of the difficulties involved in expatriate banking and the skill with which these were surmounted.
