The Brookings project was responsible for producing the
first large-scale quarterly econometric model of the U.S. economy, which was published in 1965. In February 1972, the project held a conference, and this volume is a collection of the conference papers and discussions by distinguished economists. The volume is divided into five parts. Part I contains a set of remarks by Paul Samuelson on macro-models over 50 years and a summary by Lawrence Klein of the research contributions of the Social Science Research Council-Brookings project. Part II includes 4 studies connected with the Brookings model. Part III, entitled "Complete
System," contains an evaluation by George Schink of the post-sample forecasting performance of the Brookings model and some general observations by Arthur Okun on the use of econometric models. Part IV on "Comparison of Models. The last of these papers is the only one devoted mainly to statistical methods and should be of special interest to readers of JASA.
