This book was developed out of the training programme of the Economic Development Institute of the World Bank, which is directed at senior government officials of less developed countries. The Institute encourages such officials to study not only broad issues of economic policy but also practical problems. As an aid to this study, the Institute uses case studies of investment project appraisal carried out by the World Bank. This book contains thirty such case studies, all of projects which have received loans from the Bank, or occasionally, from its affiliate, the International Development Association.
