The first essay of this volume reviews attempts over the last three decades to cope with the problems of measurement in economics and discusses within the context of a time path the analytical methods developed and employed in analyzing and learning form economic data. The second essay reviews developments since the 1950s in optimization theory and methods that underlie much of the applied work in agricultural and resource economics. The remainder of the paper is divided into sections that summarize the basic concepts and provide key references to the following topics: alternative optimization models, parametric programming and comparative statics, the duality of choice and imputation etc.
